Retail Therapy…

I need it a lot!  Long time friend and owner of Salty Girls Amber Barron is always there to lend a hand when I’ve just got to have it (she’s really good at helping me figure out what “it” is!!).  I am so intrigued by people who are brave enough to start and run small businesses whose center is their life passion.  Amber is that person sooooo, I asked her to get on board with my questions and tell me what drives her and why retail??!

CG:  Why retail??!

AB:  I started out as a buyer for women’s surf apparel and swimwear.  It is most definitely one of my favorite parts of retail, however, I was missing the customer service aspect.  Seeing someone enjoy their purchase and feel great in what they are wearing is such a rewarding feeling, especially when it comes to swimwear!

CG:  What is your favorite item/items to sell and why??

AB:  Swimwear!  I have a slight obsession with a great bikini ever since I was a little girl!  I really enjoy helping women feel comfortable when it comes to choosing the right style for them.  Everyone has concerns and “problem” areas and my goal is to always find that one suit that makes them feel great!

CG:  What are your primary influences that shape the way you stock Salty Girls??!

AB:  Charleston is such a great area when it comes to fashion and southern culture.  I think we have some amazing local retail boutiques, but I wanted to add something different.  Almost all the brands in Salty Girls are out of California.  Those brands personify that laid back beach lifestyle that I love for Salty Girls!  I like that our clothing is very casual and easy to wear!

CG:  Who is your ideal customer??!

AB:  I can honestly say all of our customers are happy, loving life, grateful for each day kind of girls!  Big smiles and tan lines!!  Salty Girls is a fun, happy & inviting place and I think our customers reflect that vibe as well!

CG:  If you could collaborate with one fashion designer, model, photographer, etc…who would it be??!

AB:  Absolutely Rebekah Steen from Goldfish Kiss!  She is the definition of GIRL CRUSH!

CG:  Tell me about your Volcom events this weekend!

AB:  Salty Girls and Volcom Women’s are teaming up  this weekend for some fun and fashion!  Tonight from 6-8pm we will have live music, jewelry by Thistle & Thatch, art by Jenn Pendergrast from Pula Kahula Designs and will be sipping on Friday night cocktails!  We are also showcasing Summer 2015 for everyone to get a sneak peek at the amazing items we will have in the store moving into next season.  All Volcom Women’s will be 20% off all weekend!  Saturday we are doing a free gift with purchase of any Volcom item!

Artisan Friend…

SO have I mentioned that I have a serious jewelry addiction??!  A stylish purse, favorite piece of jewelry and sky high pair of heels can get you pretty far in this life.  But I digress.  Sweet friend and jewelry designer Christina Jervey let me into her new home this past week to tour her amazing new workspace and take my own version of the Proust Questionnaire…

Christy studio

Christy 1CG:  Why Jewelry?

CJ:  Jewelry is an outlet for personal expression.  I try not to think about the deeper social, psychological and anthropological meanings of jewelry and adornment.  But simply, jewelry makes you feel good (AMEN sister!!)

CG:  Which piece that you have designed is your favorite??!

CJ:  My wedding bands are my favorite piece ever.  I’ve had them on for seven straight years and love them more every day.  I not only love their meaning, but I love the simplicity of the design.

CG:  What are your primary influences??!

CJ:  Nature has never ceased to amaze me.  Clearly there are alot of organic influences in my work.  From texture to form, I love irregular shapes and imperfect design.  I love finding beauty in imperfection.  Recently I’ve started incorporating more geometric and modern lines into my creations.  Trending towards a minimal, modern approach to design.

CG:  If you could custom make a piece for anyone, who would it be and what would you make them??!

CJ:  Engagement bands are my favorite piece of jewelry to make.  There is not a specific person I’d like to design for, but just knowing this piece will be worn indefinitely and symbolizes a union of marriage is completely gratifying.

CG:  What kind of Halloween candy are you giving out??!

CJ:  Reeses Cups…hands down fav Halloween candy!

I had so much fun-tried a million pieces on, marveled at her inspiration board…and came away with her amazing new 14 Karat Gold Hand Forged Neck Cuff.  On the wish list….her signature Stick Earrings, Organic Ruby Band, and Talon Pendant.

Thank you so much for the tour!  I can’t wait to see who’s going to be my next interviewee!!!  To see more of Christy’s work click HERE.
